Look Smart
It is primarily a human-compiled directory of websites. Its listings are done in two ways: one, the commercial sites pay to be listed on its commercial categories, much like an electronic ‘Yellow Pages’. Two, volunteer editors categorize non-commercial sites into its ‘Zeal’ directory. Though Zeal is a separate website, its listings are integrated into Look Smart’s results.
Lycos
Owned by Terra Lycos, it is one of the oldest search engines on the web. It provides results from Look Smart for popular queries and crawler-based results from Yahoo for other searches. Its ‘Fast-Forward’ feature presents results on one side of the screen and the actual pages listed in another. Relevant categories appear at the bottom of the search results page.
Excite
Paid listings from Overture dominate the Excite results, while non-paid results come through Inktomi.
Web Wombat
This search engine lists pages from sites within the .au (Australia) and .nz (New Zealand) domains and provides global coverage.
Web Crawler
